Agent Notch

Keep parallel coding sessions visible without making their monitoring another full-time task.

  • Personal tool: native interface and local integrations

The problem

A useful status surface should be quiet while work continues, clear when attention is needed and connected to the place where the next action happens.

My part

Personal product and native app implementation. Screens contain synthetic session data.

What this shows

I can notice friction in my own workflow and connect native desktop interaction with the tools doing the work.

Where it started

I wanted a compact view of the agents working across my projects. Terminal output already contained the signals, but seeing which session needed me meant switching between windows.

The decisions behind the product

Make state glanceable

I built a SwiftUI interface with a compact notch state and an expanded panel. Cards distinguish working, waiting and idle sessions, alongside branch, context and the latest status.

Connect the data locally

Hook and statusline adapters produce structured snapshots. The native reader combines account usage and session state, ignores stale entries and reacts to attention transitions.

Close the loop back to work

Cards can be linked to Ghostty tabs. Selecting a linked session returns to its terminal; an explicit relink flow handles missing or ambiguous matches.

What came out of the work

A working native monitoring surface

The implemented app combines agent cards, account usage, hover expansion and attention notifications. Its portfolio image uses the real native components with demo values.

A focused personal utility

It addresses the small coordination steps around parallel agent work. Productivity improvement and installation counts have not been measured.

Inside the implementation

Explore the features, architecture and quality checks

What I built

  • A native SwiftUI panel positioned around the Mac display notch, with compact and expanded states
  • Agent cards showing task, branch, recent status, context use and working/waiting/idle state
  • Per-account usage bars for five-hour and seven-day windows
  • Local hook and statusline adapters feeding a read-only session display
  • Attention notifications on state transitions and explicit links back to Ghostty tabs

How it works

  1. ObserveLocal session hooks and a statusline adapter write usage and agent snapshots.
  2. GlanceThe compact panel shows activity without occupying a normal application window.
  3. InspectHover expands the view into account usage and individual agent cards.
  4. ReturnA linked card focuses its Ghostty tab, or explains when no matching tab is available.

Quality and reliability

  • The display reads structured local snapshots and expires stale usage and session entries
  • The portfolio cover renders the actual SwiftUI components with synthetic demo data
  • No adoption, measured time savings or universal terminal compatibility is claimed
