Solve the local version of a familiar problem, rather than translating an interface and stopping there.

The problem

The product needed to understand the source and its citation rules, then explain corrections clearly enough for a student to trust the result.

My part

Solo product, implementation and search-content work.

What this shows

I can identify a narrow unmet need and turn domain-specific rules into a tool people can understand and use.

Where it started

APA 7 citation rules have a Polish adaptation. Most general citation tools focus on English output, leaving Polish students to adjust terms, author separators and missing-date conventions themselves.

0:00 I built a Polish citation tool that turns a book, article or web link into an APA reference.

0:08 Metadata fills the form, and the result includes both the bibliography entry and in-text citations.

0:16 Separate formatters handle the differences between source types.

0:22 A bibliography checker explains what needs fixing, rather than just flagging an error.

0:33 Guides connect the tool to practical help with academic writing.

The decisions behind the product

Reduce the work needed to begin

A DOI, ISBN or URL can fill the reference form from Crossref, Google Books or page metadata. The student gets a bibliography entry and both forms of in-text citation.

Make correction part of the product

I added a bibliography checker that identifies source types and applies 52 rules with suggested fixes. The generator covers 12 kinds of source.

Teach the rules around the tool

A style guide, worked examples and a quiz support the generator. Polish and English interfaces share the same underlying product.

What came out of the work

A specific gap covered end to end

The live product combines reference creation, checking, source lookup and BibTeX export. Citation history stays in the browser.

Early organic discovery

The domain recorded 479 Google search clicks across April to September 2026, with 275 in September. These are search clicks, not a count of citations generated.

Domain property: apa7.pl (all subdomains). Provider timezone: America/Los_Angeles.

  • Six complete calendar months: 1 April to 30 September 2026. Current is September; comparison baseline is April. Both comparison months have 30 days. This is not a comparison against the preceding six months.
  • Final web-search data, all countries and devices, America/Los_Angeles reporting timezone. Search clicks are not website visits or unique visitors.
  • Domain properties include all subdomains with property aggregation. Documentation pages retain exact page filters from the preceding evidence collection and measure documentation interest, not adoption.
  • Monthly chart values and the six-month total are reconciled with independently queried totals.
  • The percentage, where shown, compares September 2026 with April 2026, the last and first complete months of this window.
  • April has fewer than 100 events, so absolute counts are shown without a percentage growth claim.
  • For fewer than 100 events in the baseline period, the comparison shows absolute counts instead of a percentage.

Inside the implementation

Explore the features, architecture and quality checks

What I built

  • One field for a DOI, ISBN or URL: Crossref, Google Books or the page's own metadata fill the form, then the reference and both in-text citations appear
  • 12 source types, from books and journal articles to theses, legal acts, podcasts and software
  • A bibliography checker that parses pasted entries, detects each source type and runs 52 rules, with fix suggestions
  • Title search across OpenAlex and Open Library, plus BibTeX export and a citation history kept in the browser
  • An 8-chapter style guide, 9 example pages, a 50-question quiz and 50 blog articles
  • Polish and English interface; cookieless Umami analytics, PostHog only after consent

How it works

  1. PasteOne field takes a DOI, ISBN or URL and works out which one it is.
  2. LookupCrossref, Google Books, OpenAlex and Open Library return the metadata.
  3. FormThe metadata fills the form for one of 12 source types, still editable by hand.
  4. FormatA formatter per type applies the Polish APA 7 rules to the reference and in-text citations.
  5. CheckThe checker parses a whole bibliography and runs 52 rules over it.

Quality and reliability

  • Strict TypeScript, with a tsc --noEmit typecheck script
  • Benchmarked against five existing generators (BibGuru, Citation Machine, MyBib, Scribbr, ZoteroBib) and a written study of the Polish APA 7 adaptation
  • Self-canonical URLs, Open Graph tags and 110- to 160-character meta descriptions on the guide and example pages
