Answer a recurring everyday question, then make the answer useful for where someone actually lives.

The problem

People need two answers: whether ordinary shops open on a particular Sunday, and what is available nearby. The site needed to combine date rules with a usable local dataset.

My part

Solo work across the data, implementation and search structure, building on my original map.

What this shows

I can connect a clear user need, structured data and search discovery into a public product with measurable reach.

Where it started

Czynne w Niedziele began in 2022 as a Google My Maps collection of places open on Sundays. I rebuilt it in 2026 as a guide with calendars, maps and city pages.

0:00 I built a practical way to find places open on Sunday in Poland.

0:06 Visitors start with a city, rather than sorting through a nationwide list.

0:14 Local pages organise places by district and category, with their Sunday opening hours.

0:22 Related pages answer the next question, including whether shops will open tomorrow.

0:29 The project began as a Google map in twenty twenty-two and attracted coverage in Polish media.

0:36 An interactive calendar makes trading Sundays and holidays easier to understand.

0:43 Supporting articles connect everyday questions to the directory and calendar.

The decisions behind the product

Answer the immediate question first

The home page gives a clear answer for today and tomorrow, then points to the next trading Sunday and a downloadable calendar.

Build local pages from useful data

I merged the original map with OpenStreetMap and other sources. City pages are generated only where the dataset has enough places, with Wikidata matching and Polish declension rules.

Support exploration after the first answer

A clustered map, category pages and regional guides help visitors move from the national rule to nearby options.

What came out of the work

A useful idea picked up by the media

The original community map appeared in six articles across five media outlets: Dobreprogramy twice, Instalki, Android.com.pl, Portal Spożywczy and ESKA Rzeszów. The coverage dates from October 2022 to April 2023. The current guides are also cited on four other sites.

From a small search presence to regular discovery

Monthly Google search clicks rose from 78 in April to 12,823 in September 2026. The six-month total was 23,079 clicks; absolute counts make that early-stage growth easier to interpret.

Local coverage with a data threshold

The 6 October 2026 snapshot contained 13,995 places and 100 city pages. A city needed at least 15 places and a matching Wikidata record to receive its own page.

  • Six complete calendar months: 1 April to 30 September 2026. Current is September; comparison baseline is April. Both comparison months have 30 days. This is not a comparison against the preceding six months.
  • Final web-search data, all countries and devices, America/Los_Angeles reporting timezone. Search clicks are not website visits or unique visitors.
  • Domain properties include all subdomains with property aggregation. Documentation pages retain exact page filters from the preceding evidence collection and measure documentation interest, not adoption.
  • Monthly chart values and the six-month total are reconciled with independently queried totals.
  • The percentage, where shown, compares September 2026 with April 2026, the last and first complete months of this window.
  • April has fewer than 100 events, so absolute counts are shown without a percentage growth claim.
  • For fewer than 100 events in the baseline period, the comparison shows absolute counts instead of a percentage.

Inside the implementation

Explore the features, architecture and quality checks

What I built

  • Began in 2022 as a Google My Maps map of places open on Sundays, covered in 6 articles by dobreprogramy, Instalki, Android.com.pl, Portal Spożywczy and ESKA
  • Rebuilt in 2026 on Next.js 16: the home page answers yes or no for today and tomorrow and shows the next trading Sunday
  • 13,995 places, two thirds from OpenStreetMap, merged with the original map and other sources into one dataset and one GeoJSON file
  • 100 city pages picked by a build script that joins the dataset with Wikidata population and voivodeship data, plus a declension dictionary so each page reads as natural Polish
  • A MapLibre map with clustering, the 2026 calendar with an .ics download, 143 articles, and voivodeship and category pages
  • Cookieless Umami analytics; PostHog loads only after consent

How it works

  1. SourcesOpenStreetMap, the original 2022 map and other lists merge into one JSON dataset of 13,995 places.
  2. City buildA script joins the places with Wikidata and keeps the 100 most populous cities with at least 15 places.
  3. RulesThe trading Sundays from Art. 7 of the 2018 act, stored per year, decide every yes or no.
  4. PagesNext.js renders the daily answer, city, voivodeship and category pages, the calendar and the blog.
  5. MapMapLibre clusters the places from one GeoJSON file and re-clusters whenever a filter changes.

Quality and reliability

  • City pages only where the data can fill them: at least 15 places and a Wikidata match, to avoid thin pages
  • The statutory trading Sundays for 2025 to 2027 are stored per year, since one of them moves with Easter
  • City search folds Polish diacritics, including ł, so "lodz" finds Łódź; a miss falls back to the city index
